"GARBAGE IN, GARBAGE OUT. THE DATA WE ABSTRACT DOESN'T MEAN ANYTHING IF IT ISN'T DONE CORRECTLY! IT IS SO IMPORTANT IN ORDER FOR OUR CLIENTS TO ACCURATELY ASSESS THE CARE THEY PROVIDE."

Stacey Cole, RN

I spent most of my 20+ hospital years in the emergency department, and then moved in to the quality department where I started working with regulatory measures. I quickly moved into working with registries and clinical quality data management. Now, my expertise is in cardiovascular registries with a focus on STS.

How has the industry changed?

When I first entered the quality environment, it was very limited. In fact, there were just a few regulatory measures. Since then, registries have exploded! Not only has the number of different registries grown, but the sophistication of the existing registries has increased exponentially.

"I TRY TO NEVER LOSE SIGHT OF THE RELATIONSHIP COMPONENT OF THIS ROLE I PURPOSELY CONNECT WITH MY CLIENTS OR COWORKERS REGULARLY. IT’S WHAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE!"

Sarah Demmin, RN

I was a Critical Care Nurse for 10 years before getting into management at a large healthcare system. I was the ICU Director and eventually became the Cardiovascular Service Line Director for all Cardiac departments and even started an Interventional Cath Lab. That’s what really sparked my interest in registries.

What is the most important role that Q-Centrix plays for our partners?

The most important role that we play is to collect accurate data. Secondarily, our role as  partner to our clients is very important. Our partnership ensures improved patient care, which is really what healthcare is all about.

"THE MOST IMPORTANT ROLE A QUALITY PROFESSIONAL PLAYS IS THAT OF A PERPETUAL STUDENT OR LIFELONG LEARNER."

Jennifer Willis, RHIT

I was a Critical Care Nurse for 10 years before getting into management at a large healthcare system. I was the ICU Director and eventually became the Cardiovascular Service Line Director for all Cardiac departments and even started an Interventional Cath Lab. That’s what really sparked my interest in registries.

I started working in the medical records department in 2010 at a local hospital and simultaneously received my associate’s degree in Health Information Management. After a year in medical records, I transferred to the quality department. My colleague went to work for Q-Centrix so I began working part-time as well. When my husband’s employer moved him from Pennsylvania to Virginia, I made the decision to go full-time with Q-Centrix. It was perfect timing! Now, I oversee our Team Leaders and Quality Information Specialists who complete regulatory measure, Get With The Guidelines· HF and STK data management.

How has the industry changed since you started?

I’ve watched the majority of our facilities move from handwritten patient records to hybrid records to completely electronic. There’s a much greater focus on improving performance rather than simply reporting the data.

"MY FAVORITE QUOTE IS BY HENRY FORD 'QUALITY IS DOING IT RIGHT WHEN NO ONE IS LOOKING.'"

Cheyenne Rule, RT(R)(CI)

I started in trauma and AAA repair cases. Then, when the adrenaline rush subsided, I moved to the Cath Lab. I spent six years with all heart Caths, peripheral cases and EP cases. Then, I volunteered to learn the VQI registry at my hospital. After being on call in the Cath Lab for 20 nights in a row, I looked into Q-Centrix.

What part of your background helped shape your role today?

I spent many hours in peripheral vascular cases in both the Cath Lab and the OR. My clinical experience is vital to the role I play. Many of the peripheral registries are still in their infancy so you need to have an exceptional understanding of the data and the registries themselves. Our partner facilities depend on my expertise

"IT’S NOT ABOUT POLICING PRACTICE, IT’S ABOUT EMPOWERING CLINICIANS WITH ACCURATE AND ACTIONABLE DATA TO DRIVE QUALITY IMPROVEMENT."

Joanna Wood, RN

I started as an RN on a cardiac stepdown unit caring for patients post bypass surgery. Then, I moved to the Cardiac Health Center where I cared for and educated patients undergoing cardiac procedures. Concurrently, I started the Get with the Guidelines Program for HF and AMI patients. Then, my position was transitioned to the quality department. I became the regulatory measure coordinator and championed quality improvement efforts, engaging and educating clinicians on quality measures and ensuring standards of care were met.

What brought you to Q-Centrix?

After having my second child and commuting nearly an hour each way to work, I was looking for better work-life balance so I literally Googled some terms and found Q-Centrix. Five years later, I know that I could not have made a better decision for myself or my family. My career has grown and I love having the opportunity to be a leader in such an incredible organization.

"GOOD, BETTER, BEST. NEVER LET IT REST UNTIL YOUR GOOD IS BETTER THAN BEST!”

Molly Sauder, RCIS

Quality has always played a role in my career. After I graduated with my degree I started working at a local hospital. Even in the beginning, I would abstract for the ACC ICD registry on down days in the lab. Then I learned ACC, PCI and ACTION. That’s how I started working toward becoming an expert on the cardiovascular registries ACC ICD, PCI and ACTION. Coming from a background in the Cardiac Cath Lab, I have an excellent understanding of the clinical side of these registries and I can easily understand the whole picture.

How has the industry changed since you started?

Quality used to be easily overshadowed and now it’s a real focus for hospitals. Everyone cares about quality now. And, I love to see it. I get to watch hospitals achieve amazing success in quality improvement and maintain a truly high standard of quality patient care. It makes me so proud.
